The SWARM scientists are a group of researchers that will study a canyon off Palmer Station called Palmer Deep.

SWARM's goal:

To study the impact of physical characteristics (temperature, light, salinity, etc) on the biology (chlorophyll, krill, penguins, etc) in Antarctica.

Details about Palmer Deep

Let's take a look at the map!

What does the grey portion of the map represent?

Land is the answer you are looking for! That means that the white areas of the map are water.

The islands around Palmer Deep are Anvers (the large grey area at the top), Joubin Islands (JOUB), Wilhelm Archipelago (WAUW), etc. These areas are important for penguin habitat.

The map shows the locations of the study sites where the scientists will focus on collecting data. The stations range from 1 – 5, with 1 being closest to land and 5 the furthest away from land and directly over the deepest part of the canyon.
